A divorced father and his one-week-a-year son build a log raft on a river in Sweden. When the boy gets trapped under a log, the father becomes both hero and anti-hero. A troubled couple trekking in Nepal rescue their sherpa after a fall, then have to save their marriage from altitude sickness. A woman fears that her husband was aboard the plane she sees on TV smashing into the World Trade Tower on 9/11 2001. Some time in the hi-tech future, a woman runs away from her planned adolescence. In the title story of this collection, a charismatic preacher migrates with his wife and daughters from Minnesota to Beverly Hills, parish to parish, fleeing a secret. Vagabond, pilgrim, refugee, tourist for the diverse travelers who populate these stories, homesickness is more about moving on than about looking back.

Disclosure upfront: the author is a friend of mine. But: the book was not a gift, I bought it on Kindle, and the author is geographically too far away to kick me for a negative review, so I fear not.
The stories are set all over the Northern Hemisphere: USA, Europe, Asia. The heroes are an international and multicultural crowd.
My summary: some very good, some not. A mixed bag of travelers' tales, episodic 'memoirs' (though not autobiographical) and assorted other things.

I loved the first story. Set in Portugal in 2001, it has two female neighbors in the Douro vineyards, both with husbands far away. One is a German on a business trip in the US, booked on a flight out of Logan on Sep 11, the other a worker in a fertilizer factory in Toulouse, France. A smart play on modern times, communication, and disasters.

A Greek story is less convincing. Four young Americans hitchhiking in Greece, with overly funny dialogues, a little too much boastful abuse of Greek language and cultural bits and pieces, and a somewhat technical stretch of youthful porn.

A Nepalese hiking adventure turns into a high altitude marriage crisis. Very strong and plausible on physical and mental details in head, stomach, lungs, and muscles. A particularly impressive narrative device: we get the hike story twice, first as told by the author, then re-told by the participants in an attempt to reconstruct. Just like real life. What do we do things for, if not for talking about them.

We dive into a large American family's history and get viral epidemics and asteroid forecasts on top of the too many names. Doesn't work for me. Purge the family details and focus on the virus!

We are given a sci-fi story with much vocabulary of its own. It didn't pull me in.

I don't want to summarize every story here, to avoid bureaucratic perfection.

Conclusion: a talented young author. If he would just focus diligently on working hard at his fiction writing, we could expect good things to come from him. Alas, he is a multi-talent. He also does music and poetry and photography and history and politics and hiking and kayaking. And probably more. That may all stand in the way of focus. Generalism is a big problem, even if on a high level.
